So, to this angler and anglers everywhere in his situation, I offer Painfully Obvious Tip™ #1
When fishing to downstream lies on a small stream resist the urge to stand where the fish are and cast to where the fish are not while wearing a bright red sweatshirt. This lad should have been wearing something duller than a fire engine red sweatshirt and should have observed the water before getting in. He was smack in the middle of the prime holding water; that other water isn't worth fishing.*
*Except when it is, but it's usually not.
For smallmouth bass, they're not picky about your attire. I've never noticed they cared.
ReplyDeleteBut the position in the water seems to be an issue no matter what species is being pursued. Had a similar conversation once on a river. Was asked if I knew if there were fish in the area.
Yes there is, you're standing on them.
Yeah, flashy attire may actually be a benefit for smallmouth.
DeleteStealth is the word that needs to be here or there. Guy looks like a stop light.

Yeah, I fished that same run while kneeling on the gravel bar about ten yards upstream of where he was standing. And I left my red sweatshirt at home.
DeleteThat's great info.
ReplyDeleteI just can't believe someone would do that.
I think he's clearly a casual angler vs those of us who have unhealthy attractions to this sport and its art.
DeleteI love the tip. you need a refresher on the basics from time to time.

I think Painfully Obvious Tips will become a series here on SE. It's also a great outlet for my sarcasm.
DeleteI couldn't help to reblog it.
Deletethe deep wisdom of the Painfully Obvious Tips™ must be thrust upon the unsuspecting world.
Tres bien!
DeleteLet's face it: painfully obvious tips are the only tips worth knowing.
ReplyDeleteAnd also, tweed is best.
Worth knowing AND an outlet for sarcasm. This could be a real winner!
ReplyDeleteYes, Tweed is best.
